Clamped between Maas and Waal is one of the most beautiful municipalities in the Netherlands. Berg and Dal is attractive with an overwhelming landscape, rich cultural history and special wine-growing. The big altitude differences, from which Berg and Dal are named, provide beautiful views. The combination of landscapes makes Berg and Dal special; hills are more in the Netherlands, polders of course too, but the ensemble rarely occurs.
The Romans already knew: it is good to be so hidden between the hills and surrounded by extensive forests, across the German border and near Nijmegen. With over 22 hectares of viticulture, Groesbeek is the largest wine village in the Netherlands. There are daily tours and tastings, with the highlight of the year the Dutch Wine Festivals Groesbeek in the last weekend of September.
Every year, on the third day of the International Four Days of Nijmegen, more than 40,000 hikers pass the villages Groesbeek, Breedeweg and Berg and Dal. The rest of the year Berg and Dal is also a trek as a hiking area. The many hiking trails, including the famous Pieterpad, the forests and the Dutch views, offer hikers a wonderful challenge. Or take a nice stroll into the Millingerwaard nature reserve and unwind in the Ooijpolder. A walk over the Devil's mountains demands strong calves! Do not feel like walking? Then take the bike and conquer the famous Zevenheuvelenweg or do you visit abroad on one of the spectacular mountain bike routes.
The village of Groesbeek played a crucial role in the liberation of the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden in 1944. The National Liberation Museum 1944-1945 is devoted to this important period. Together with the Orientalis Holy Land Foundation Museum and the Africa Museum, the three museums form the basis for day-long cultural experience.
